There are few things more sacred than happy hour. After an entire day spent grinding away at work, the temptation of stopping by one of our neighborhood haunts after logging off for the day for some decently priced cocktails is too hard to resist. Fortunately, we are very weak in willpower, so you can often find us throwing back a couple of drinks in the early evening as we try to forget—at least for a few hours—all the adulting we still have left to do before dinner.
With so many bars and restaurants in Houston offering happy hours, it can sometimes be hard to figure out the best options: Are you looking to sip and be seen? In need of some very cheap well whiskey? Craving snacks? Want to vent about your relationship woes with a disinterested bartender? Whatever the case—and whatever your poison—we have you covered with this list of our favorite Houston happy hours.
Axelrad
midtown
Midtown beer garden Axelrad has a nearly all-day happy hour that includes $3 beers and mimosas, $4 wells, $5 frozens, and $6 michel-rad-as. If you get hungry, don’t worry, the historic bungalow shares a patio with Luigi’s Pizzeria, which serves pies and small bites ranging from chicken wings to mozzarella sticks, both no more than $10.
Happy hour: weekdays, noon–7pm

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse
washington corridor, Montrose
Few Houston happy hours burn brighter than that of Betelgeuse Betelgeuse. The cosmic-themed bar offers draft beer in a 32-ounce milk jug bottle for $7, wines by the glass for $6, and select cocktails for $8. Consider chasing your drinks with some of the bar’s specialty pizzas.
Happy hour: every day, 4–6pm
Catbirds
montrose
In this economy, we’re all about saving our money. Thankfully, Catbirds is there for us when we’re in need of a good, cheap happy hour. You can find wells for $3.50, and beers—yes, all of them—priced at $3.50 or less.
Happy hour: every day, until 6:30pm

Double Trouble
midtown
The Mid Main portion of Midtown is a walkable couple of blocks filled with some of our favorite Houston businesses, from My Flaming Heart and Sig’s Lagoon to the Continental Club and Winnie’s. Chief among our favorites is caffeine-powered cocktail bar Double Trouble. While Double Trouble has a great happy hour year-round, for the month of August, it’s turbocharged. Monday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm all caffeinated drinks (including cocktails) are 25 percent off, on Mondays from 4 to 10pm all espresso martinis are 20 percent off, and on Sundays from noon to 6pm all frozen cocktails are 25 percent off—including the dangerously strong Suffering Bastard.
Happy hour: Mon thru Sat, 11am–4pm; Sun, noon–6pm

Eight Row Flint has a large pet-friendly patio to enjoy happy hour food and drinks.
Eight Row Flint
Heights
Pet lovers know that the Heights location of Eight Row Flint is one of the best places in Houston to get in some happy hour time with their pups. The bar, which has a large pet-friendly patio, offers a happy hour menu that includes $5 select beers; $7 select cocktails; and $6 food items like watermelon salad, brussels sprout tacos, and chips and salsa. The bar also hosts an all-day happy hour for drinks only on Wednesday—a godsend if you, like us, find hump day to be the most difficult day of the workweek.
Happy hour: weekdays, 11am–6pm

EZ’s Liquor Lounge
Heights
The only thing we love more than the Frito pie at this kitschy Heights dive bar is its happy hour. Stop by to enjoy $4 draft beers, $2 off house cocktails (we recommend the EZ G&T), and $5 wells. The intimate back patio here is our favorite place to sip our happy hour libations—at least when the weather is tolerable.
Happy hour: weekdays, 2–5:30pm; Tue, all day
Grand Prize
museum district
This bar is another great spot to go to if your pockets are feeling a little tighter than usual. Grand Prize offers $7 cocktails during happy hour. Choose from a Hurricane, made with light and dark rums, passion fruit liqueur, orange lime, and mixed berries; a Southside, made with gin, lemon, and mint; or the Summertime Fine, a drink with white rum, charred pineapple, allspice, and lime. You can also get a beer and shot combo for $10 or a well drink for $3.
Happy hour: every day, 4–8pm

Monkey’s Tail
Lindale park, conroe
This cocktail bar knows how to throw an epic happy hour. The bar offers select cocktails like daiquiris, margaritas, and gin mules for $7 during its weekday happy hour; $7 will also get you small frozen drinks like the chile mangonada and banana colada. For beer drinkers, there’s $1 off bottled and canned beers, and for vino lovers there’s $2 off all wine.
Happy hour: weekdays, 4–7pm
Postino
montrose
Postino’s Montrose restaurant, our favorite for its location in the historic gayborhood, offers a happy hour with $6 glasses of wine and pitchers of beer, plus $25 bottles of wine and bruschetta boards on Mondays and Tuesdays after 8pm. After eating your fill of bruschetta, consider walking over to one of the area’s historic LGBTQ+ bars for a nightcap or a drag show.
Happy hour: every day until 5pm

Roswell’s Saloon
montrose
Treat your inner star child with a late happy hour at new extraterrestrial-themed bar Roswell’s Saloon. Although it’s only offered for an hour, if you’re committed you should be able to throw back two or three of the bar’s space-themed cocktails for the low price of $6 a pop. Deals also includes $2 off all wine and draft beer. Just remember to phone home—a.k.a call a rideshare—if you decide to keep the party going.
Happy hour: daily, 7–8pm
Trash Panda Drinking Club
northside
“Death is coming, eat trash, be free,” reads a neon sign in racoon-themed Northside cocktail bar Trash Panda Drinking Club. The happy hour here will indeed have you feeling free, but the food and drinks are far from trash. The bar’s happy hour includes $6 cocktails, $7 highballs, $6 glasses of wine, and $5 draft beers. For food, there’s a trio of mini quesabirria tacos and a trio of mini chicken tacos, both priced at a cool 6 bucks—prices low enough to coax in even the most destitute of trash pandas.
Happy hour: weekdays, 4–7pm
Two Headed Dog
Midtown
Kitschy Midtown dive bar Two Headed Dog might be known for its outlandish community games and having bathrooms decoupaged with vintage Playboy magazines, but we think this spot should be equally celebrated for its happy hour. Early evening drink specials here include $3 green tea shots, $5 select frozens, $6 yellow belly and whiskey, and a very tasty old fashioned that will only set you back $7. While enjoying drinks, grab some free popcorn from the bar’s old-school popcorn maker and enjoy what is in all likelihood going to be a memorable evening.
Happy hour: weekdays, 2–7pm
Voodoo Queen
second ward
This quirky daiquiri spot has some of the best frozen drinks in town, and its happy hour, which the bar refers to as its “I’m so happy I could shit hour,” has a little something for everyone. That something includes $3 well drinks, $3 jello syringes (for those who really want to get turned up), $3 select beers, and $1 off all of the bar’s frozen machine drinks. When it’s raining, Voodoo Queen also offers its Bourbon St. Hurricane for the low, low price of $6.
Happy hour: Mon, all day; Tue thru Fri, 4:20–7:20pm
